Academies and VAT

Gregg Pearman (BDO) answers a query on whether schools converting to academy trusts are required to submit VAT returns immediately following their conversion.

I have a number of secondary school clients. At present they send all of their sales and purchase information to the local authority which includes the VAT on its VAT return. The schools will be converting to academies over the next 12 to 24 months possibly as part of multi-academy trusts with a number of other schools in the area. Are they required to submit VAT returns immediately following the conversion?
