Ask an expert: enquiries into CT returns

Question

HMRC opened an enquiry into my company's corporation tax return over 12 months ago and little progress seems to have been made since then even though every effort has been made to supply the Officer conducting the enquiry with the information and documentation that has been requested.

The Officer does not seem to intend to conclude the enquiry any time soon.

Is there anything we can do to expedite the process?

Answer

Protracted enquiries in which the Officer makes repeated wide-ranging requests for information are increasingly common at the moment.

Such enquiries create an unwanted administrative burden for companies and a great deal of financial uncertainty.
