The Sunday Times has reported (16 June) that Credit Suisse is suing HMRC to recover at least £239m paid for the bank payroll tax. The temporary levy was introduced by then Chancellor Alistair Darling following the financial crisis which led to popular anger over bankers’ bonuses. The temporary four month tax placed a levy of 50% on individual bonuses paid above £25,000. The case is reportedly set to be head in the High Court in late June.
