Brexit: all united by fatigue and confusion

The political arguments are set to rage for several years to come and the nation will pay the price of the uncertainty, writes Philip Stephens.

One thing is certain. Well almost. Barring an extraordinary accident Britain will not leave the European Union on the due date of 29 March. There are still i’s to be dotted and t’s to be crossed – not least in removing the original Brexit date from the statute book. That said all but a handful of kamikaze Brexiters have given up on the idea of Britain crashing out of the Union this month without a deal with Brussels. One way or another Britain’s partners will agree to extend the Article 50 negotiating process.

There is little consolation however for those seeking even a modest amount of certainty. Theresa May has said she will seek only a short extension of three...
