The Financial Times (23 October) reports that Chancellor Philip Hammond is said considering the possibility that the Autumn Statement will — in future years — return to its original function of fiscal forecasting, in order to avoid ‘gimmicks’ and micromanagement and to refocus the government’s tax and spending decisions on the spring Budget.

This year’s statement, though, will go ahead as planned on 23 November. It is expected be a significant event given that it Hammond’s first chance to set out the government’s new economic and fiscal policy following the Brexit vote.
