The scheme was due to close and be replaced by the childcare payments scheme (tax-free childcare) from 6 April. The secretary of state for education announced the extension during a debate in the House of Commons in response to concerns about problems with the operation of tax-free childcare.
Parents can claim either childcare vouchers or tax-free childcare, but not both.
