Far off in the midst of what feels like the early Jurassic era — I began to give consideration to what the Institute's priorities should be in my year as CIOT President. It didn't take long to decide that that the key focus would be the new powers. By the time that I became President most of the legal framework would be in place: what interested me is how it was going to work in practice. Would we all for example recognise an Innocent Error when we saw one?

I spend much of Presidential year gaining an understanding of what was happening on the ground. Part of this involved visiting our branch network to hear how CIOT members were coping with the new regime. But it was important to get a broad perspective so I also spent a lot of time with HMRC...
