The European Commission has adopted non-binding guidelines on the disclosure of non-financial information by companies, covering environmental and social matters.

The European Commission has adopted non-binding guidelines on the disclosure of non-financial information by companies, covering environmental and social matters. These guidelines build on the existing ‘Directive on disclosure of non-financial and diversity information by certain large undertakings and groups’, which came into force in December 2014.

Commission vice-president, Valdis Dombrovskis, said: ‘Europe needs to take the lead in making economies greener and more sustainable ... By providing relevant information on their environmental and social credentials, companies are doing themselves a favour and helping their investors, lenders and society at large.’

The directive applies to large public interest entities with more than 500 employees, encompassing approximately 6,000 large companies and groups across the EU, intended to keep the administrative burden to a minimum.
