In his last Duty Column Gavin McFarlane of Temple Chambers Cardiff looks back over the 34 years he has spent in indirect taxation
 
The Duty Column has run in The Tax Journal now for well over a decade. As this will be the final piece on this subject which I shall contribute I thought that it might be interesting to look back on the 34 years which I have spent in indirect taxation and reflect on the changes which have taken place over that time.
 
I had been recruited to the Solicitors Office of the former Customs & Excise department in September 1972. This was as part of the enormous intake which had been assembled to prepare for the introduction of VAT on 1 April 1973 together...
