The Treasury has issued a Direction
(under Coronavirus Act 2020 ss 71 and 76) setting out the operational
requirements for the government’s new ‘eat out to help out’ scheme which,
alongside the temporary reduced rate of VAT for catering, is designed to
encourage customers to return to restaurants and other establishments on
Mondays to Wednesdays in August 2020. Although the VAT changes have broadly
been welcomed, the eat out scheme has attracted criticism, with Shadow
Chancellor Anneliese Dodds tweeting: ‘families aren’t staying at home because
they’re waiting for a tenner off a meal. They’re staying at home because they’re
still worried about coronavirus’.
