Economics focus: Osborne’s fifth bite at the cherry

George Osborne will present his fifth Budget on 19 March in the context of an improving outlook for the economy. David Smith looks at what might be in store

On 19 March believe it or not George Osborne will present his fifth Budget. By that time he will have been chancellor for less than four years. But this will nevertheless be his fifth Budget (the others were June 2010 and March 2011 2012 and 2013).

The simple device of having a budget soon after the last election and another just before the next will barring accidents give Osborne six bites at the budget cherry as well as five Autumn Statements. He may have had to give up the traditional battered red budget box which has now gone...
