The EU Parliament and Council have reached provisional agreement on revised EU ETS targets for the period from 2021 to 2030.

The EU Parliament and Council have reached provisional agreement on revised EU ETS targets for the period from 2021 to 2030. This will involve the overall number of emission allowances declining at an annual rate of 2.2% from 2021 onwards, compared to the current rate of 1.74%, in order to meet the target reduction in sectors covered by the EU ETS of 43% as compared to 2005. Changes are required to achieve the agreed EU target for reducing emissions by at least 40% by 2030 as compared to 1990.

The text will now have to be formally approved by the Parliament and the Council, following which the revised EU ETS directive will be published in the EU Official Journal and enter into force 20 days after publication. See http://bit.ly/2hfj4Ju.
