As usual the early Budget Debates were largely dominated by political points-scoring. However the first day's debate was notable for the strongly-worded criticisms of some accountancy firms which were made by two senior Conservative MPs. Andrew Mitchell (Sutton Coldfield) commented:
'It is clearly the right of all citizens to organise their affairs in a tax-efficient way and I hope that none of us would quibble with that. But in recent years certain obscene schemes that should not be allowed have been peddled by Ernst...
