Scientific research suggests that global warming caused by higher levels of greenhouse gases trapping solar energy in the Earth's atmosphere could lead to catastrophic consequences. These include flooding of low-lying areas drought and severe climatic changes causing food shortages and displacement of millions of people. The aim of the Kyoto summit held in 1997 was to set definitive targets for the US Japan and members of the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas levels. The contractual target set for the UK was to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 12.5% from its 1990 levels by 2010.
