The government defeated an opposition motion in the House of Commons on Monday to defer the planned increase in road fuel duties on 1 January 2013. The rates of duty on road fuels were originally increased by FA 2011 s 20 with effect from 1 January 2012, although those increases were deferred firstly by statutory instrument and then by FA 2012 s 188.
Conservative MPs were, however, encouraged to vote with the government, on the understanding that an announcement would be included in the Autumn Statement on 5 December, suggesting that the increase will be postponed further.
