I suppose it is not often that the columns of the Financial Times contain a surprise.
 
During my world travels in 2004 I was in Germany for my daughter's wedding. Her husband-to-be collected a guest from Frankfurt airport and at the same time collected a copy of the Financial Times of 21 July for me. I was astounded to read the first part of an article on the results of its investigation of multinationals having subsidiaries in the UK. Author John Plender was astonished to find that such companies pay little tax (some as low as 6.2%)...
