As the environment soars up the political agenda there has been much discussion as to how taxes can be used to achieve environmental objectives. Different countries have taken different approaches to green taxes and unlike VAT there is no common system of green taxation within the European Union (EU). The UK has a relatively well developed system of green taxes and has been attempting to balance environmental aims with the need for UK businesses to remain competitive.
