Of the 1,837 cases resolved during the year, 1,743 involved HMRC with 1,239 relating to tax credit complaints (particularly HMRC refusals to write off overpaid amounts), 57% of which were upheld either partially or substantially.
In relation to other areas of taxation, of the 504 cases resolved only around 20% of complaints were upheld. The report highlights ‘concerns with the handling of cases involving the application of Extra Statutory Concession A19’ and provides case studies involving underpayments of tax under PAYE.
