Parts of HMRC’s online filing system were closed for upgrades and maintenance over the weekend, and some services will remain unavailable until 6 am on Tuesday.

HMRC said self assessment and corporation tax returns could still be submitted using commercial software, but online acknowledgements would be delayed: ‘Your acknowledgement will be sent once the service is restored. Please do not attempt to resubmit your submission.’

The upgrades were set to include changes to the corporation tax iXBRL system, which should enable CT returns for accounting periods ending after 31 March 2011 to be filed online, the CIOT said.

The tax body noted that HMRC carries out major changes to the system twice a year, in April and October, and changes to tax rates cannot be made until the Finance Act has received Royal Assent. It has asked HMRC to review the timing of upgrades.
