HMRC Stakeholder Digest: 19 December 2024

HMRC’s final Stakeholder Digest for 2024 includes the following notes and reminders:

  • John-Paul Marks is to take over as HMRC First Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive when Jim Harra retires in spring 2025. Mr Marks is currently Permanent Secretary to the Scottish Government. See also HMRC’s press release.
  • HMRC plan to publish a new Digital Roadmap in spring 2025.
  • VAT registration for private schools: reminder that private schools receiving fees must check if and when they need to register for VAT.
  • Basis period reform: link to guidance on overlap relief for the transitional 2023–24 tax year and noting the forthcoming 31 January 2025 self-assessment filing deadline.
  • Consultation reminder: HMRC’s consultation on new ways to tackle non-compliance is open until 22 January 2025 and invites views on improving HMRC’s approach to correcting taxpayer inaccuracies.
