I first met Hugh Mainprice in 1979. His daughter Clare was a pupil in the chambers where I was the junior tenant. She had suggested to him that he try me out as junior to one of our senior members Robin Auld QC (later Auld LJ) whom Hugh was instructing in the VAT appeal of CCE v Elizabeth Johnson. The case concerned a travel organiser's making arrangements for language students to travel and study in the UK. Was she an agent or a principal?
