Taxpayers who were due to pay income tax by the end of July, but do not receive a self assessment statement until this month, will have until 27 September to pay the tax without incurring an interest charge.

Most statements were sent out on time, HMRC said, but around 500,000 taxpayers whose Unique Taxpayer Reference ends with digits from 70 to 99 may be affected: ‘If so you will receive your statement in August.’

Last month HMRC announced that those taxpayers would not be charged interest if they paid the tax within 30 days of receiving the statement.

The department admitted that an unusual increase in the number of taxpayers needing to make payments on account by 31 July left it short of the special paper used for payment counterfoils.
