The creation of the Welsh Assembly in July 1999 the Scottish Parliament in May 1999 and the Northern Ireland Assembly (currently suspended from 15 October 2002) has affected the provision of healthcare across the UK and means that now each country is responsible for the provision of healthcare within its own borders.
 
The supporting infrastructure for the provision of healthcare will be different in each country but the central issues remain the same as does the application of tax and National Insurance contributions.
