What is the connection between the railways and the NI system?
 
Firstly they're both in a real mess after decades of incessant tinkering by politicians of all persuasions suffering from initiativitis. Secondly as readers will undoubtedly appreciate from this special issue devoted to NIC they both attract the 'anorak' tendency. Intending no slight on my fellow contributors this week I am proud to have been asked to guest-edit the work of such a band of dedicated specialists and I hope they will forgive me for comparing them to the devotees of the Class 47 now standing at platform 6b.
