How did you end up in tax?
I was at a party in West London in the mid-1980s having a conversation about pit closures. Whether a pit was profitable or not depended on how the fixed costs were treated. It interested me (and accountants earned money) so I went to Cardiff University to study accountancy. I qualified as a chartered accountant and then sat ATII for the then Institute of Taxation.
Who in tax do you most admire?
Mike Warburton of Grant Thornton. I first came across him when I was working in Gloucestershire in the early 1990s and he was making a big impact in that area. However my admiration is principally for his work in the popular press and bringing tax to the masses so to speak. All achieved from...
