Economics focus: Osborne buys time – but how much?

George Osborne pulled off several surprises in his Autumn Statement. A drop in borrowing this year was unexpected, as were some of the individual tax measures he announced. The underlying fiscal position deteriorated, however, and the chancellor will face some tough choices in future budgets and spending reviews.
