The Chancellor is in denial. He is trying to tell us that the ever-widening hole in his finances is a temporary embarrassment that will vanish as the economy and the stock market strengthen. However the reality is that they are performing as well as (and in the latter case better than) expected at Budget time. Yet the public finances continue to deteriorate alarmingly.
