In considering the practical issues in relation to NICs that affect and perplex the average payroll manager we have plenty of material. As the thorny subject of directors is being dealt with under a separate article in this special edition (see Peter Arrowsmith's article on p 13) this leaves me free to look at one or two other topics that regularly trip up employers not to mention the affected employee!
 
At the risk of stating the obvious we need to begin by understanding the fundamentals of the differing earnings periods for tax and NICs.
