SDLT is hardly a straightforward tax at the best of times. When land transactions are combined with compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) building works other land transactions planning obligations and other complicated legal arrangements typically seen in development transactions the task of analysing the SDLT liabilities becomes a minefield. The objective however is simple: to identify the land transactions taking place and minimise as far as possible the SDLT charges.
