'Our tax code is too long too complicated and gives too much power to the tax collector' wrote David Goldberg QC Gray's Inn in a letter to The Times (14 May). 'If the Government was really interested in … fairness it would simplify the system. It is well known that a low-rate simple tax system can even when coupled with a high threshold produce a reduction in the burden of compliance and an increase in the tax yield.'
