Dame Lesley Strathie has stepped down as HMRC’s Chief Executive due to ill health, the department has announced. She was diagnosed with cancer in July and has decided to step down to concentrate on her treatment.

Arrangements for appointing a successor will be announced shortly.

‘Mike Clasper, Non Executive Chairman of HMRC, will continue to provide leadership and direction to the department. Dave Hartnett, Permanent Secretary for Tax, will continue to act as interim Principal Accounting Officer,’ HMRC added.

Strathie joined HMRC in 2008 from Jobcentre Plus, where she was Chief Executive.

Dave Hartnett, Permanent Secretary for Tax, said: ‘Lesley has achieved a great deal during her three years as Chief Executive of HMRC. She is a wonderful colleague and I have learnt a great deal from working so closely with her. She will be very much missed and the work she has driven forward has ensured our department is in a great shape for her successor to continue the transformation.’
