HMRC has seen a 47% increase in whistleblower reports of tax fraud in the year to 30 June 2023, according to new research from law firm RPC (157,000 reports compared to 107,000 in the previous 12 months).
The firm suggests that the increase is likely to reflect the scale of fraud against the Covid-19 support schemes and the wider public reaction to fraudsters taking advantage of the furlough and eat out to help out initiatives.
