The bare bones Budget

Having done his tax raising (stealthily) at the Autumn Statement, the chancellor’s Spring Budget was a bare bones affair, writes Chris Sanger (EY).

So are we back to Budgets as normal?

Pretty much. Today had all the normal Budget trappings: the Red Book the OBR forecast the ‘family photo’ of the ministerial team with the red box outside Number 11. Many of our old favourite elements are back – though some might lament Mr Hunt’s failure to reinstate the old and noble tradition of the chancellor having a wee dram to fortify themselves during the speech.

That said this Budget felt very much like part two of the Autumn Statement. With the raising being done back in November the field was open to focus on spending measures.
