The recent change of government presented an opportunity to formally review progress on MTD. While that appears not to be the new administration’s intention, there is an opportunity to look at how MTD fits into plans for digitalisation of UK tax administration more generally and at the wider opportunities technology presents for taxpayers and HMRC. There has been too much focus on quarterly reporting and too little on the bigger picture where the biggest opportunities lie.
