HMRC has published an ‘issue briefing’ reporting progress on consolidation of its offices into 13 regional centres and five specialist offices, first announced in 2015.
Offices in eight ‘transitional’ locations are to be retained for up to ten years to accommodate staff who are not yet able to move to the new centres. Both the NAO and the PAC have criticised HMRC’s timetable as ‘over-ambitious’ and some projects have been re-prioritised. The 3,000 staff currently working on EU exit may increase to 5,300 depending on the outcome of negotiations.
