For years I have been arguing that taxpayers — at least in the UK — are basically honest and that the deliberate tax evader is a rare beast. Other people have different views and recently we have seen how the dodgy geezer featured in the HMRC TV advertisements fits the middle classes' classic picture of your tax evader. As the advertising campaign began in the press it looked uncomfortably like a reinforcement of old stereotypes of the tax fraudster as likely to be the small craftsman doing domestic jobs for cash with a nudge and a wink and at the Federation of Small Businesses we felt this was unfair and complained about the presentation.
