Low-Income Pensioners & the Tax System

 
Robin Williamson summarises LITRG's latest report on low-income pensioners and the tax system its findings and recommendations
 
There are now some 1.8 million pensioners living in poverty in the UK. Over the next 30 years the proportion of over-65s in the population is forecast to increase by some 50% from the current level according to DWP sources. If gloomy prognostications about the inadequacy of pension provision for today's workforce are right the proportion of pensioners living on low incomes is likely to increase. All these factors suggest that HMRC should make the low-income pensioner a priority when devising its administrative systems and developing its customer-service strategies.
