Tax Journal (TJ): How significant a change is the election of the new Labour government?

David Gauke (DG): Changes of government in the UK are a rarity (this is only the third time it has happened since 1979) and can provide an opportunity for a policy reset. In this particular case the stated differences in tax policy between the two main parties were relatively small but there is a larger divergence in terms of instincts and values. A new government also means new ministers and for the most part these ministers will have limited Whitehall experience. They will bring a fresh pair of eyes to existing challenges but will also have to master their brief and the processes of government.
