DST was always meant to be temporary, says Exchequer Secretary

Speaking recently with Tax Journal the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury James Murray addressed speculation over a potential reduction of the UK Digital Services Tax (DST) to facilitate a trade deal with the United States. Murray pointed out that the DST was always intended to be repealed on the implementation of Pillar One but said: ‘The Chancellor has made it clear that we want all businesses including those in the digital sector to pay their fair share of tax. That principle will guide our actions.’ However he also stressed the importance of securing a trade deal saying: ‘We need to give our negotiators the space to achieve the best possible deal for the UK.’ Murray ‘would not give a running commentary on negotiations’ but said: ‘British businesses want a deal not a trade war.
