The King’s Speech is scheduled to take place on 17 July 2024. This will mark the formal beginning of the new parliamentary session.

Summer parliamentary recess was scheduled to start on 23 July. However, as the Institute of Government explains, this is less than six days from the King’s Speech and so would not leave enough time for the usual six sitting days taken to debate and vote on it, so it is likely that new recess dates will be set.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has said that a Budget would not be held without an independent forecast from the OBR, which requires at least ten weeks’ notice. So, in the case of a Labour government, a fiscal event could not be held before 13 September.
