An e-petition has been launched calling on the government to withdraw its direct recovery of debt (DRD) proposals, which seeks to withdraw outstanding tax debts directly from taxpayers’ bank accounts.

The petition, which was set up by Mike Truman, editor of Taxation magazine, has been signed by more than 1,500 people so far and states: ‘These proposals have been widely criticised [by representative bodies, charities and civil liberties groups] as poorly conceived, unworkable, and severely deficient in safeguards. They should not be implemented in Finance Act 2015. Instead they should be withdrawn and sufficient time given to carry out a wide-ranging consultation on the problem of deliberate non-payment and potential solutions.’

The e-petition runs until 30 March 2015.
