My personal pick of last month's highlights.

Interesting views from leading tax professionals, plus the inside track from HMRC.

  1. International tax reform: what will the future be? - As chair of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) tax committee at the OECD, Will Morris has been closely involved in all aspects of the BEPS project - and he is exceptionally well placed to consider how the international tax landscape is likely to continue to evolve. In this article, he sets out four factors that will continue to drive change over the next decade and beyond.
  2. Why we need an annual wealth tax - Sam Mitha CBE is a former policy adviser at HMRC and writes for us on some of the big policy issues in tax today. Here, he argues he need for an annual wealth tax to mitigate the economic, social and political risks posed by wealth inequality in Britain today.
  3. HMRC challenged over CRS information exchange rules - You may have read reports in the national media that HMRC is being challenged over its implementation of the common reporting standard on grounds of right to privacy and data protection. Hatice Ismail (Simmons & Simmons) examines the challenge's likelihood of success.
  4. Legal challenge to two UK reliefs: another EU uncertainty - Another legal challenge - but this time it's Brussels that is  threatening the UK over ‘illegal’ tax breaks. Andrew Parkes (Milestone International Tax Partners) wonders why now.
  5. In conversation with HMRC’s Jim Harra - Heather Self (Blick Rothenberg) talks to HMRC’s Jim Harra about Brexit, the department’s services for large businesses and its approach to dispute resolution. There are no prizes for guessing which of those is currently occupying most of his time.
