Gearing Up For Yet More Controversy

Our previous article (The Tax Journal Issue 834 24 April 2006) dealt with the controversial topic of geared investments in the areas of film technology and scientific research. Gearing via the use of loans utilising risk-mitigation strategies gives a favourable 'risk-free' return to the investor. Commercially risky enterprises such as British Qualifying Films have benefited from the additional investment and tax-geared investments have spread and evolved using more complex financial structures. It is around these geared investments that a whole industry has grown and it is this industry and its investors which have been targeted by the HMRC to prevent 'tax seepage' from the Exchequer.
