HMRC has provided the CIOT and ATT with an update in relation to its digital services. This covers the following areas:

  • Making tax digital for business (MTDfB), including income tax self-assessment and VAT: HMRC plans to release MTD-ITSA to all paid agents from Spring 2018 and start a controlled trial of MTD-VAT for a limited number;
  • Making tax digital for individuals (MTDfI), including the self-assessment pre-population application programming interface;
  • Agent services accounts;
  • Annual tax on enveloped dwellings (ATED): from 1 April 2018, all online ATED returns must be filed using the ATED online digital service; and
  • Cyber security: beware of malicious Microsoft Office documents attached to emails.
