Simon Sweetman looks at the advice given by the professional bodies to those waiting for the final decision in Jones v Garnett and finds the position unsatisfactory from all points of view
 
On 17/18 January 2006 the Court of Appeal will hear the case of Jones v Garnett. It is just possible that a decision will be announced before 31 January. It is not likely but the faint hope of an early decision may be enough for a large number of people to hold off the completion of their 2004/5 tax returns until the last minute.
 
Given the complexity of the situation that might be unwise. What we now have is advice given to their members by various professional bodies — the CIOT ICAEW ACCA ...
