HMRC have published responses to its consultation Simplifying and modernising HMRC's Income Tax services through the tax administration framework.
In summary, HMRC intends to bring in new legislation to allow certain communications with taxpayers to be made digitally by default. The response notes that ‘HMRC’s ambition is for a more real-time, integrated, and accurate data-led service for Income Tax and NICs by 2030’.
In terms of better support for agents, HMRC ‘recognises that agents should be able to see and do whatever their clients want them to’ and say that ‘HMRC will ensure that agents are considered from the outset in the design and development of new services’.
The response also commits to improving systems to allow tax codes to be updated more quickly and completing a review of the criteria HMRC use to determine who needs to file a self-assessment tax return.
