How did you end up in VAT?
By complete chance! I was out of work for a long while living at home and my father ‘encouraged’ me to join the Civil Service. The application form asked which ‘department’ and ‘location’ I would prefer. I left the department blank merely asking to be close to Nottingham to be near my girlfriend at the time. I got Derby VAT office – and my girlfriend left me!
What is the biggest practical problem you face in your role on a day-to-day basis?
Ensuring that any communication sent out is clear precise and copied to all the relevant people involved. You can never over-communicate in a large organisation.
