The Welsh Government has launched a consultation on a proposal to withdraw charitable non-domestic rates relief from private schools with effect from 1 April 2025 (mirroring the proposed withdrawal of relief in England). The accompanying press release says: ‘This proposal seeks to bring independent schools with charitable status in line with other independent schools in Wales, for the purposes of non-domestic rates. The aim is to make additional funding available for local services in Wales, by withdrawing a government funded tax reduction for private schools.’
According to the Welsh Government, only 17 of the 83 independent schools in Wales receive charitable rates relief. The relief currently costs the Government around £1.3m every year.
The consultation runs until 16 December 2024.
