Review into the R&D tax credits system

The current consultation into the R&D tax credits system provides an opportunity for the government to initiate improvements to encourage investment, writes Penny Simmons (Pinsent Masons).

At the Spring Budget 2021 Chancellor Sunak announced an extensive review of the R&D tax reliefs system ‘with the objective of ensuring the UK remains a competitive location for cutting edge research that the reliefs continue to be fit for purpose and that taxpayer money is effectively targeted.’ This article will review the existing tax relief system the nature of possible changes and how they might impact businesses operating in R&D intensive industries notably the life sciences and green energy sectors.
