For many tax advisers who advise UK multinationals the announcement made by Shire (the UK-tax-resident holding company of a global specialty biopharmaceutical group) on 15 April did not come as a huge surprise. There cannot be many UK multinationals that have not at least considered briefly the possibility of implementing such a transaction even if only to dismiss it as 'too hard' or 'not yet'. The Shire transaction will therefore be followed closely by UK plc.
